Poetry in motion!
Summer is here, and the Summer Poetry Competition has returned. So what better than to send in an entry about spring? Um. Don't ask.
Technically, my entry was about "balance", one of the three themes for the poems this year (the others being "joy" and "harvest"). I decided to write shorter poem than I usually do, playing around a bit with Shire hobbits' fondness for traditions. What if there are traditions we're not so happy with after all?
Admittedly, one reason the poem is a bit shorter is a combination of writer's block and sheer hobbity procrastination. The hours before the competition, I hadn't even started writing. So, I went out in the sun, found a place with a fine view, had an ale and started jotting down a few rhymes and ideas. The result is below, a poem about fence running, which us hobbit apparently do to celebrate Bullroarer Took in the springtime. Why... why...
The fifth verse was recited while enjoying the new /dramatic_defeat emote, which yer can see in the video. I made it through the whole verse while the animation lasted.

Fence Running
It takes a little effort It makes so little sense To scale the straight and narrow To run the wooden fence
Go forth with speed and balance And you may reach the end But first you need the courage The fence post to ascend
To celebrate a hero We run the fence in spring While fussing and complaining ‘Why do this silly thing?’
The sheep watch with amusement At hobbits wobbling by And soon a gaffer tumbles Falls headfirst with a cry
The rest of us will follow We trip and slip and sprawl The grass, the mud, the bramble The nettles break our fall…
To celebrate a hero We run the fence in spring While cursing old traditions ‘Who thought of this silly celebration when instead we could eat and drink and dance and sing?’
