About the song
Every Green Dragon Friday anniversary, The Brandy Badgers unveil a new song to celebrate the occasion. For the eleventh anniversary this year, I wrote some words to "Hello Sunshine", the new Bruce Springsteen song. It is perhaps a slightly calmer song than the party hoppers we sometimes go for. New Orleans or the The PSB version of Go West spring to mind as quite merry ones from the past.
Then again, Green Dragon Friday isn't just about hobbits bouncing around merrily while eating pie. The mood at the inn can be somber or even sentimental at times, depending on both roleplaying developments and real-life happenings. In many cases, this is related to people who have stopped playing the game, meaning we won't see their characters in the Shire no more. At the Dragon, we regularly toast those adventurous hobbits, wishing them well in their travels outside of the bounds while secretly hoping to see them back again.
It does happen from time to time. Other times, though, it won't. Two weeks ago, we received news that a kin member had passed away, and this was very much on my mind when I wrote the lyrics below.
A sad time, then. Still, these are the times when events like GDF may shine extra bright. Our little hobbit community on Laurelin has developed over a long time, sometimes by players quarreling or bickering, but mostly by being grateful for the opportunity to spend time together. Then it feels only natural to use a festive occasion to raise a glass and wish safe travels to a good friend not with us anymore, while sharing friendly words with those who are still here.
