Green A poem by Simbo

If ever there was an official Green Dragon poet, Simbo would be the front-runner for the title. Most of his former works (which you can read on the Grand Order noticeboard) have been recited in the Dragon over the years, many more than once. Here is his entry to the Green Dragon arts competition,

Now all around is life in green From hills that lie a-dazing To fields that paint a tranquil scene I can but stand there gazing

I see the oak, the beech, the elm The willow that's a-weeping Beneath there is a verdant realm The mossy floor lies sleeping

And meadows full of emerald grass In winds it is a-swaying And hedgerows line the country paths In which there's children playing

I see the ivy bushes gleam Up walls they are a-growing And grassy reeds beside the stream Where turquoise water's flowing

And gardens full of budding green The fragrance is a-drifting The jade-specked flowers cast their sheen Their peacock blooms uplifing

I see greenfinches in the sky Their songs they are a-singing With olive wings they spread to fly Such joy they are all bringing

And then I see Green Dragon Inn Where folk they are a-going All making such a merry din Beside the fire glowing

I see there folk both short and tall Yet green they're all a-wearing And many pictures on the wall The colours they're all sharing

And green the rug that's on the floor Although the floor's a-sagging But green it stays for evermore Our home in the Green Dragon!

Green Dragon Friday Anniversary Song A song by Peppy

(based on Naar de speeltuin/To the playgrounds, a Dutch children's song)

A long-time visitor at the Green Dragon, Peppy regularly performs music which has the audience dancing the night away. The entry to the arts competition is performed with the Bramblebury Band, and it should put you right into that happy Green Dragon spirit!

Every friday night, you know, many hobbits like to go to the Green Dragon, a lovely cozy inn. It’s Green Dragon Friday Night All are filled with great delight as they make their way to where fun will soon begin.

Lina plays there on her lute, Matzo grumbles 'bout the youth Yes, it is Green Dragon Friday! Barmy puts the prices up. We dance on the worn-out rug. Yes, it is Green Dragon Friday!

refrain: There are drinks and there are pies and the music's always nice and if we are very lucky there is poetry as well! When it ends, we're little sad but not for long and you can bet: Next Green Dragon Friday, friday at eight bells!

A magic harp that has no strings, one of many wond’rous things you will get to see when you come to Dragon Night Just don’t bring your bagpipes in. Someone there will have your skin! Everyone who wants can perform in their own right.

The latest news will be announced. To the hopping song we bounce. Yes, it is Green Dragon Friday! Even people that are rude cannot spoil our happy mood Yes, it is Green Dragon Friday!

refrain

"Home, sweet home", the final song everyone here sings along. But it's time to leave. All agree, that it was great! All week long we think, you know, O, I really want to go to Green Dragon Friday! I can hardly wait!

Come quick, fireworks are outside to end another splendid night! Yes, it is Green Dragon Friday! We hope to see you all next time. Bring a riddle, song or rhyme. Yes, it is Green Dragon Friday!

refrain

Loud and Bright A poem by Tallic

Tallic is in the unfortunate situation of not being able to visit the Dragon most Fridays. Still, the fireworks shot up at the end of a Dragon night can be heard and seen far and wide, and his poem is inspired by that spectacle. And as he says himself, "With the recent arrival of that Mister Gandalf at the Methel stage, it seemed like a grand idea to enter a poem about fireworks to the competition".

With a bang and flash Loud and bright The sky it seems Is all alight With green And blue And red And white In the evening time It's quite a sight

Gandalf's back Or so's the word With a cart that's full Of fireworks, i've heard They wizz And fizz And soar Like birds He should take care Not to singe his beard

Not all folk Enjoy the sight Or flash and bangs That fill the night They moan And groan Call them A blight Lobelia I heard Got quite a fright

A Poem to Remember A poem by Krym

Krym is a relatively new visitor at the Dragon, but she has already made her mark by entertaining the guests with both stories and songs. Her entry to the arts competition embraces the spirit of friendship shared by the Green Dragon hobbits. And, of course, it has to be said that many GDF hobbits have problems remembering most things after a few mugs of the local porter!

I wanted ter write a most grand poem, Ter make ye clap an' shout, But as I scribble down the words, I can't recall what it's about.

It could have been 'bout fluffy clouds, Or the birds up in the sky, Or dancing little catfish, In the river swimmin' by.

Or rainbows arching grandly, Across the Shire so fair, Or trees just waftin' in the breeze, Whisp'rin' without a care.

Well it surely weren't about barrows!!, Or brigands along the way! Just seems I only can remember That I had somethin' to say.

I know there weren't no farmin', Or fishin' skills involved. But I'll keep tryin' to recall 'Til subject is resolved.

It might have been about mushrooms, B'cause I do so love them dearly. Or about the coneys nibblin' grass, But I can't remember clearly.

Maybe it were 'bout whittlin' wood!, 'Cuz I do that all the time. Or eatin' fruity pastries, Since they smell an' taste sublime!

I had no idea when I started, That me memory were so shot! But I wrote down this here poem To recall what I fergot!

If I can't recall the topic soon I'll surely have a fit. All I need is just one clue Like ---- no, that weren't it.

Oh, NOW I just remembered!! It were about dear friends like you!! Whose help an' understandin' Has always seen me through.

An' all the times we shared together Dancin' in the sun An' every cheerful greetin' Afore me day's begun

Why how could I've forgotten?! It is clearly plain as day! That all this here was just the thing I really meant to say.

We've shared the tunes that warm our hearts An' chuckle in between An' listen to the tales of glory As we lick the pie plates clean

I cuss the mem'ries in me head That often do depart, But they pale dimly to the warmer ones That I keep here in me heart!

An' that's what I surely meant ter say in the first place! I hope ye remember the last part most!

Potato A picture by Bonkadoc

Another Dragon regular, Bonkadoc has never been stingy when it comes to sharing produce from the Shire farms. The turnip juice he brought this autumn still has the hobbits talking, often in hushed voices. For last year's celebration, he brought potatoes for everyone, and it is in this spirit he has entered the following picture to the arts contest.

The Green Dragon's Sprit A picture by Mebenca

When she is not out digging wells, Mebenca can often be seen at the Dragon, singing songs or reciting poems. However, she also has skills with the paint brush, as evidenced by the picture below. The work is titled "The Green Dragon's Spirit", and it is likely not the local liquor she is addressing in the picture!
