Mordor: The Honey Oat Biscuit Video

One does not simply get a permit to film in Mordor.

With the launch of the Mordor Expansion pack, SSG released a launch trailer which met with mixed responses. So I got to thinking: How would things turn out if I made a Mordor video myself?

I usually spend a fair bit of time when making videos, but this time I wanted to speed up things considerably. There were a few reasons for doing so:

  • I have a bit of traveling coming up, so I don't have access to a computer for a few days.
  • When I have a lot of time, I start "overproducing" my videos. Wouldn't it be fun to add a shaky cam here? How about trying some of the new fancy filters I got? Couldn't things be better if I spliced and hacked this to pieces? And so on. Usually, the added dazzle isn't worth it, and in many cases it detracts from the experience.
  • Sometimes I like making these little competitions for myself, timewise.

So: I decided that I couldn't spend more than 24 hours, from when I started making the video until I uploaded it to Youtube. Naturally, this meant far less than 24 hour effective editing time. Hobbits need to eat and sleep, after all.

I uploaded the video 21 hours after start. An informed estimate is that I spent a total of 8 hours effective time creating the video. This included gathering and shooting footage (including converting some of the in-game BIK videos), finding music, editing it all in PowerDirector, fixing lighting, and so on.

One note about the video quality. Usually I aim for at least 1080p in my videos. However, this time I stopped at 720p. The resolution of some of the in-game BIK videos were so low, things got remarkably fuzzy when blowing them up in larger size.

So here it is, warts and all. The 24-hour challenge "Mordor : The Honey Oat Biscuit Video" (1). Let me know what yer think below!

Please note: If you haven't played the introduction of the Mordor Expac, there are some spoilers. Nothing surprising if you have read the books or seen the movies, though.

(1) Why "Honey Oat Biscuit Video", you might ask? Well, "Honey Oat Biscuit Movies" is my very own imaginary movie production company. Besides, biscuits are tasty. Especially honey oats. So there.
