Midnight on Stock Road

Although the Shire is generally a safe place, there are sometimes big folk of a rather nasty sort travelling through our land. Especially by Stock Road. Be careful, hobbit!

About the song

Best sung to the tune of Ye Jacobites by Name, a popular Scottish folk song. There are numerous recordings of the tune. Below yer can hear two, an acoustic folk version by The Corries and a rather more rocky recording by Stamp'n Go Shanty.

This is one of the first lyrics I wrote in-game, back in 2010, not least evidenced by the fact that I kept a few of the original song lines. It was already a favourite tune in the Songburrow Strollers setlist, but for RP reasons we'd like a more suitable song title in-game. Rowana suggested we call it Midnight on Stock Road, and that surely is one of the more memorable song titles in our collection. In-game, we play a speeded-up version of the song, giving a stronger urgency to the already slightly ominous melody.

Since the song lyrics is performed regularly, the poor bounders on Laurelin are usually greeted with a question of how many rocks they have slept behind today...

Lyrics: Midnight on Stock Road

Gather round, all you hobbits, lend an ear, lend an ear Gather round, all you hobbits, lend an ear If you go down old Stock road, it is time to pay what's owed Dangers wait when it is midnight on Stock road Dangers wait when it is midnight on Stock road

What is right, and what is wrong, by our law, by our law What is right, and what is wrong, by our law Will not help you on the road, if you meet with the wrong crowd Dangers wait when it is midnight on Stock road Dangers wait when it is midnight on Stock road

Even bounders and shirrifs, famed afar, famed afar Even bounders and shirrifs, famed afar Will go hide behind a rock, if they're on the road to Stock Dangers wait when it is midnight on Stock road Dangers wait when it is midnight on Stock road

There are brigands in our lands, roving wild, roving wild There are brigands in our lands, roving wild They will give you quite a shock, if you're on the road to Stock Dangers wait when it is midnight on Stock road Dangers wait when it is midnight on Stock road

If you go down old Stock road, it is time to pay what's owed Dangers wait when it is midnight on Stock road Dangers wait when it is midnight on Stock road
