The summerdays may be bright, but not everyone are eager ter go out to enjoy the fair days. Them should have a song too, though!
About the song
Best sung to the tune "Factory Girls" by eternal hobbit favourites Flogging Molly (see video below), this is yet another song I didn't really know how would turn out when I started writing them words. In the end, I stuck to the slightly mellow "look to the past" theme of the original, but tried meshing that with the thoughts of happy summer days. I think that works well, although there were times I wondered just how sad the tale would turn out to be.
The song was first performed during the Grand Summer Picnic, which was also home to the Songburrow Strollers Summer concert, on June 22nd 2014.
Yer can see more of me songs in me songbook!
Lyrics: Grand Summer Song
Long ago she too felt young In the days of yore she always danced and sang The future looked so bright Now there's only night
Memories are all she got While some are fading as she drinks her tot Some never go away They'll always stay
She remembers walking on a sunny field And behind the hawthorn hedge it is revealed
She sees a table all decked with food All her friends are there Having a summer picnic All their clothes are bright and fair
From the door she hears a knock In the darkness is is quite a shock But she hesitates While her memory resonates
She remembers walking on a sunny field And behind the hawthorn hedge it is revealed
She sees the fairest of hobbit lads Asking her for a dance Walking upon the meadow When a knock breaks her dreamy trance
Open the door, dear Come walk the meadow again, dear Leave yer burrow and come outside There is nothing here to fear
Open the door, dear Come walk the meadow again, dear Leave yer burrow and come outside There is nothing here to fear
So she walks outside onto the sunny field And behind the hawthorn hedge it is revealed
She sees a table all decked with food All her friends are there Having a summer picnic All their clothes are bright and fair
She sees the fairest of hobbit lads Asking her for a dance Walking upon the meadow Bringing kisses and sweet romance
And when the summerday is done One memory is gone but new are won And summer never ends When spent with all of yer friends
