Grumpy Hobbit

Only one thing is fer sure at the Green Dragon: There is always at least one real grumpy old hobbit around, complaining about them youngsters of today and how everything was just so much better in the days of yore. Obviously they need a song too!

Best sung to the tune of Home from the forest by Gordon Lightfoot. Them lyrics were written one day I wondered just why them crusty oldsters keep coming to the Dragon, even though all them youngsters aggravate them all the time. I bet we are all somewhat fond of each other after all!

Also make sure ter read the poem "The Grump" by Simbo, which touches upon the very same kind of hobbits.

Grumpy Hobbit

The inn was loud and lively and the ales of spring did flow Young hobbits danced upon the rug, their faces all aglow But from the back, complaints and hacks, and tales of dread and woe From the old man in the chair Grumpy hobbit

He scolds them younger hobbits as they stumble by his chair He curses as they play too loud, the swearwords fill the air The ale is way too warm tonight, no pie is sweet enough Says the old man in the chair Grumpy hobbit

There's dancing on the tables and the room is way too dark There's no respect fer gaffers, and this is his sole remark That everything is just plain wrong, no thing is good enough Says the old man in the chair Grumpy hobbit

There was a time he too was young and sang a merry tune Him dancing on the rug made all the lasses stop and swoon The hours at the inn grew late with ales and pies and song With the old man in the chair Grumpy hobbit

But as the years went by he found his hair was turning grey And try though as he might his body wouldn't let him sway No joy and happy days no more as old friends passed away From the old man in the chair Grumpy hobbit

The inn is loud and lively and the ales of spring they flow And sitting in his chair the grumpy hobbit looks aglow The memories of yesterday bring happiness tonight To the old man in the chair Grumpy hobbit
