One fun thing about Middle Earth is that the star constellations are the same as we see in our real world skies, just with different names. A few of these have also made their way into LOTRO. Me favourite has always been Orion, which in Middle Earth is called the Swordsman of the Sky. So I wrote a song about him!
The Swordsman in the Sky
Best sung to the tune of "Scarborough Settlers Lament", below in a fine version by Stan Rogers. [video type="youtube" clip_id="CNS4u9b7U4U"] Stan Rogers- Scarborough Settlers Lament
I am not 100 % sure that yer average Tolkien hobbit would know these stars to be called "the swordsman of the sky", since it is very much an elven thing. Still, given the amount of elves running around Michel Delving every night, I am sure me bard could have picked it up somewhere. And at least the third verse should put the hobbit firmly back into this!
Swordsman in the Sky
Upon a cloudless and pleasant night I walk into the fields The sun gives up its rays of light And then they are revealed The pale blue moon, the Mariner The Sickle hovering high And watching over all below The Swordsman in the Sky Swordsman in the Sky
I never feel alone and small When I can see him there His blade is sharp, his grip is strong He'll chase both wolf and bear His shiny belt lights up the night It twinkles in my eyes He watches over all below The Swordsman in the Sky Swordsman in the Sky
I wonder if he can ever sleep If ever he can rest If ever he has scones for tea If ever he has guests I dream that one day I will fly To bring him ale and pie And offer him some company The Swordsman in the Sky Swordsman in the Sky
