Green Dragon Friday @ Bywater
May 8 @ 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM

Green Dragon

Date: Every Friday
Time: 7:30PM UK time (usually 2:30PM servertime)
Location: Green Dragon Inn, Bywater, Laurelin server

Weekly hobbit gathering at the Green Dragon inn in Bywater, running ever since May 18 2008. This is an event for and by hobbits, although a few visiting traveling dwarves are always welcome. It is also a 100% in-character event, so don’t go talking about things not belonging in Middle Earth! Come along for songs, dances, poetry, tales, riddles, news and much grand roleplaying! And do offer yer own entertainment, if yer like!

Sometimes, we’ll run “Lone Bard Fridays”, where we only allow solo or duo performances. This is to limit the impact of big bands at the Dragon, and allow newcomer performers a chance to show their skills.

At other times over the year, GDF will move to other inns in the Shire. The new years party is usually held at the Plough and Stars in Brockenborings, while we always escape Bywater when the mayor hosts the Farmer’s faire in the late summer.

Event guidelines:

Green Dragon Friday is an in-character roleplaying event aiming to replicate a lively hobbit night at the inn. We try to enable a healthy lively hobbit roleplayer community here on Laurelin. To help us do this, please follow these guidelines:

  • While dwarves are welcome at the inn, we ask that taller characters (elves and menfolk) do not attend the event. Men and elves were rarely (if ever) seen travelling through the Shire villages (and especially not the inns). However, if yer have quests to do at the inn, by all means come inside to finish them
  • Be in-character – be a hobbit! Keep player interactions (chats, emotes) and entertainment in-character, basically by talking about the things that hobbits in Middle-Earth would. Don’t discuss real-life modern-day things, game mechanics, etc. Avoid using forced emotes, setting off fireworks inside, bringing pets that wouldn’t belong in an inn, throwing 3000 snowballs, etc.
  • Be active and engage with the others. It is better to participate than to just stand around waiting for others to entertain you (however, feel free to come observe things the first few times).
  • Avoid multi-boxing with lots of alts. Yes, we know that you love to pull off that fat sound of a many-musician band. However, when the room is full of similarly-clad robots marching in line (if they move at all), who don’t respond when you talk to them, things get rather creepy and the immersion we look for is often ruined.
  • Entertainers are very welcome! Just sign up with the hobbit hosting the event, preferably by a /tell. Note that we absolutely love solo bards/performers – a lone lute-player is often better suited for the inn setting than a huge band. Also note that we absolutely love other kinds of entertainment than music: Poems, stories, riddles, the latest news from the Shire… lovely! If you want to play music, it is grand if yer aim for a folksy hobbity vibe, with reels, jigs, waltzes, hornpipes and the likes.
  • Gossip and news is very welcome! This helps bring life to the event and the roleplaying in the Shire. Just remember to keep things in-character. Related to events: We generally don’t advertise events held on other servers, events not of hobbit interest, events not held in the Shire or events not of a roleplaying character.

Additionally, we ask that participants follow the roleplaying rules and policy for Laurelin, with regard to player names, chat behaviour and harassment.

Lastly, while the above may sound like a long list of rules, don’t worry too much! Them hobbits are a friendly and tolerant lot, eager to welcome new visitors to the inn. See yer there!

When you attend Green Dragon Friday, send your warm thoughts to the first people enjoying the event back in May 2008. Not least the creator, Mae Skeffington, who fought hard to set it up and make it last over the years. That was a mighty fine initiative!

Davlo’s burrow-warming party @ Maltmead
May 16 @ 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM

Hullo everyone!

It doesn’t seem that long ago that I wandered into the Green Dragon on a Friday evening and was met by such a bunch of friendly hobbits. Of course Miss Lina had me introduce myself to you all and tell the story of how I recently moved here and purchased a nice hobbit hole. Well, over the past few weeks, I’ve been working extra hard and cleaning and getting things sorted out, that I’m finally ready to start having guests. Of course guests were always welcome, and I did see some footprints, so maybe I’ve just been missing you if you’ve stopped by in your travels.  So as to not miss you the next time, I have an announcement!

You are all hereby invited to a housewarming gathering at 4 Wending Way, Maltmead, in the Shire Homesteads, at 7:30pm on Saturday, May 16th. Beer, ale, pipeweed, pies, cakes, muffins and mushrooms will all be provided as my cupboards will be open for everyone! We will have a tour of the place, my cousins will be down and we’ll play some music for everyone, and we’ll even partake in a game at some point. If you want you can even bring your fishing pole and try to catch that big fish that keeps taking my bait! And to show everyone we’re having a party, feel free to shoot of some fireworks anytime (there will be some of those provided too!)

So tell all your friends, and come join me on the 16th! Hope to see you there!

The biscuit Bake-off

We’ll have a biscuit baking competition this year. The aim of the competition is to find out who bakes the best biscuits which includes one of the drinks sold by Barmy at the Green Dragon, as well as have some fun on the way!

Obviously, there is no way to have a jury eat your biscuits and judge the quality of it in-game. That’s why we will ask the participants to describe the basics of their baked biscuits. The jury will then choose the biscuit they think sound the best. It will be subjective, but then again, most matters of taste are.

How to enter

To enter the biscuit bake-off, please do the following:

  1. Be (or create) a hobbit on the Laurelin server
  2. Contact me and say that you’d like to enter the competition. Provide the name of the character you’ll enter with. You must sign up in advance to participate. By signing up, we’ll act as if you have also sent a sample of 20 biscuits in advance to the jury.
  3. Check the rules below.
  4. Come to the Green Dragon for the anniversary party on Friday May 22 and be prepared to join the bake-off.

Rules

During the party, be prepared to do the following when called up by the jury:

  1. Present the name of your biscuit. The name should indicate what kind of biscuit this is. For instance, “This is Ma Willowwood’s sticky honey oat biscuits”.
  2. Describe what your biscuits look like, by a single emote text. This could be the shape, colour, appearance or any other interesting information about the visuals of your biscuit. For instance, “/e holds up a pale round sticky-looking biscuit, slightly burned on top”. Short and sweet does it.
  3. Answer two questions in /say when prompted by the jury.
    • What are the main ingredients in your biscuit recipe?
Remember, you must include at least one Barmy-bought drink in the biscuit batter, see list below.
    • What is your best serving suggestion for this biscuit?
Give us an example of the best way to enjoy your biscuit. Does it work well with other food and drink, on special occasions, for special meals, etc.?

Include one of the following drinks in the batter:

  • 1404 Vintage Reserve. Red Wine (flagon). White Wine (flagon). Ale (frothy pint). Green Dragon’s Breath Ale. Hard cider. Mead. Beer (small).

Keep your answers fitting to your character and the LOTRO universe, yet most of all short and simple in case there are many participants! Avoid power-emoting (for instance, variations of “this is clearly the best and most fabulous biscuit you have ever laid your eyes on” won’t do at all, since there’s no wriggle room for the judges).

Try to tempt the judges and be creative, but don’t go overboard either! Short and simple is sweet! Finally, remember that all biscuits should be edible and not poisonous, but they don’t necessarily have to taste good…

After all biscuits have been presented, the jury will deliberate a bit and vote on the winner.

All participants will get a reward. The top baker will also win fine prizes, as well as be awarded a title and likely get honourable mentions in the Bramblebury Gazette. There may also be special prizes given for particularly fun or clever entries.

The judges are currently kept as a secret, to avoid the danger of bribes!
