Winter wanderings and wonderings
About the song
It’s not been a hard winter this year, at least not here in Brockenborings, but I still miss warmer days and sun. So here is a song I wrote a while ago, about longing for the summer when the weather is frosty. It is best sung to Roger Whittaker’s quite magnificent “The Last Farewell”, which yer can hear below.
Days of Winter
On the ground a golden blanket drifts in lazy waves
The northern breeze a gentle shiver blows
All the crops already harvested with care
The berries have been picked before the snow
A spell of rain should reach us in the evening
So far away the days of summer sun
But still our Shire home
Brings hope of warmth and comfort
And soon the days of winter will be gone
Wearing scarves and wooly mittens I go wandering
Through fields where willows wear their winter crowns
Their leafless branches reaching out to touch me
like they hope they can escape the frozen ground
I sing a gentle song just as I pass them
Of leaves in summer breeze and setting sun
For still our Shire home
Brings hope of warmth and comfort
And soon the days of winter will be gone
In the fireplace my kettle starts a-whistleing
A cup of tea and biscuits by the fire
And my dog lies curled up neatly on the warm rug
Looking out for treats that fall down from up high
Though days are grey and chilly winds are blowing
In here we feel the promises of sun
For still our Shire home
Brings hope of warmth and comfort
And soon the days of winter will be gone
Days of Winter
Here’s Roger Whittaker’s original song. Enjoy!
