Update 16 of Lord Of The Rings Online just went beta on the Bullroarer test server. With this update, LOTRO players will head to Eastern Gondor, and here are the maps to the new areas. Plus a few pictures! (NB! Possible spoilers!)
Edit April 10th: Now updated with ready maps, not the placeholders.
First off, a disclaimer:
1) If you want a pristine game experience with no ruined surprises about the new regions, you should probably stop reading now, if not before! Not least because I have added some screenshots of iconic locations in the game at the bottom of the post.
You can see larger versions of all the maps by clicking on them.
Eastern Gondor
You can find the most current beta patch notes on Turbine’s Bullroarer forums.
As with the last few updates to the game world, these new regions feel rather small, claustrophobic and linear. Not much roaming around in large areas here. Even so, there are some iconic locations from Tolkiens world here. Perhaps the most iconic, Minas Tirith, is only visible outside of the playing area here. Access to that city will come with a later update. I have added some screenshots below the maps, though, for those interested in a peek at what is coming.
Update 16 has maps to the following new areas (in addition to the overview map of the region, see above):
- Upper Lebennin
- Lossarnach
- South Ithilien
There is also the city of Osgiliath which houses three new instances, two 3-man and one 6-man:
- Sunken Labyrinth
- The Dome of Stars
- The Ruined City
If you’d like to see where these areas are in Middle Earth, this map from Encyclopedia of Arda should help yer find yer bearings.

Here are the individual maps.
Upper Lebennin
Lebennin is a wide green land and fiefdom in southern Gondor and home to the city of Pelargir. The Anduin delta lies to the south. The new region continues east of the current Lebennin region, which was added with Update 15.
Lossarnach
Lossarnach, also known as the Vale of flowers, was a fiefdom of Southern Gondor and a fertile region lying south of the White Mountains. It was the region closest to Minas Tirith after Osgiliath.
South Ithilien
Ithilien, or Moon-land, is a fiefdom of Gondor. It is the only part of Gondor across the Great River Anduin, lying between the river and the Ephel Dúath, close to Mordor. It is divided by the stream of Morgulduin into North and South Ithilien.
Osgiliath
Osgiliath was the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Gondor, founded by Isildur and Anárion near the end of the Second Age. It gradually fell into ruin, and in LOTRO it is a strategically important point to cross over the Anduin.

Below are some screenshots from the new update. Don’t read any further if you don’t want spoilers!
Alright
Here we go.
Really.
Remember to click on them images for larger versions…
Now!
Minas Tirith across the Anduin to the left, Osgiliath to the east. Hobbit in the middle.
View towards the Morgul Vale.
Up close and personal to the entrance to Mordor. The fortresses may be part of Minas Morgul? (it does not say in the game). Those guards in front have about 2 million morale points each.
Entrance to Osgiliath. Note the huge thing guarding the gate.
The banners in front of the Gates to Mordor do look like those at Minas Morgul… “a moon disfigured by a ghastly face of death”
Good catch – thanks!
