Growing up in Brockenborings was ever so grand. So here is another song about those lovely lands up north.
Home to more or less legendary sheepdogs, an angry ma (who still makes me feel welcome every time I come home), and lots of grand sturdy northern hobbits, I always love visiting Brockenborings. Everytime I do, I feel inspired ter write another song of me home.
The song is based on a medley of Jock O’ Hazeldean and The Gentle Maiden. The shift in the melody line + rhythm halfway through the song made fer an interesting challenge in writing the words below. My own version was first performed at Green Dragon Friday March 28 2013.
Grand Northern Land Song
A field where dewdrops linger long
A field of grassy green
Where flowers sway in northern breeze
No finer you have seen
Where badgers dig into the soil
And greet the spring with song
It’s close to home and family
It’s where I do belong
I long for friendly words tonight
The path leads to the door
Inside me ma with biscuits sweet
She asks if I want more
I rest beside the fireplace
When someone licks me cheek#
Me dog has seen me biscuit plate
He’s anything but meek
With tea and dog and blanket warm
I never felt so grand
No harm will come to us tonight
We’re safe in northern land
No sounds but friendly words tonight
Behind the kitchen door
Inside me ma with biscuits sweet
She asks if I want more
When evening approaches I wander
Down the roads where I used to play
The neighbours greet me friendly
Making me feel like it’s yesterday
The inn is as loud and lively
As when I played there those years ago
The locals still favour their porter
Dark with a subtle earthy glow
We sing through the night, loud, loud as we
Toast those not around
We never forget all the friends we had
Who lived in the northern land
The sun rises slow over Greenfields
When we all stumble our way back home
We’re happy the path leads us downwards#
Drunk from the ale with the earthen foam
The breakfast is served when I enter
Bacon and eggs will do wonders now
The time passes slow here in Brockenborings
Where songs flutter through the bough
A song through the day, loud, loud as we
Toast those not around
We never forget all the friends we had
Who lived in the northern land
